Food Porn Friday- Sushi Gen

I seriously need to get on Yelp y’all.  Can’t tell ya how many times I rely on that sucker to map out my next meal.  When I’m feeling sharp hunger pains, I open the app.  When I’m on vacay, I open the app.  When I’m working in LA, en route to meet clients, or even lounging in and around my own hood, I open the app.  I have such confidence in Yelp that I’ll rely solely on high star ratings without reading any reviews and happily shell out a couple hundred bucks for dinner if users say its 4.5 stars and above.  Has Yelp ever done did me wrong?  Hell mo-fo’in YES!  I rarely ever outwardly dis an establishment on the blog…ok maybe ONE time (hello, remember Season’s 52? Egads!)…but I gotta set the record straight concerning the HIGHEST rated sushi joint in Downtown LA, Sushi Gen, so y’all are in the know.
 Spicy Tuna Tsumami:  The meal's only saving grace and this was our first dish...lucky bastards...saved the establishment from a negative star rating...Fresh and savory with bits of masago mixed right in.  But c'mon, who the eff charges for ginger???  Oh, I know...Sushi Gen.  Cheap bastards!
 Miso-marinated Black Cod:  I don't think anyone can mess cod up.  Buttery fat oozing from it's pores...juicy and well portioned...here's where it starts getting baaaaaaddd....
 Sweet raw shrimp "Amaebi" with fried heads...The shrimp was super-duper fishy, tough, and lacked the sugary sweetness usually found in sushi-grade shrimp...the heads seem to have been deep fried in week-old oil...you know how sometimes you can "taste" the used oil that's been recycled from tempura to "crunchy rolls" and now to shrimp?  Yup, that's what it tasted like...grossnage!
 Assorted sushi:  Toro, yellowtail, salmon, octopus, amberjack, uni, and clam...An EPIC FAIL!!!  Dude, the sushi came out room temperature (Travesty!), they charged (again!) for extra ginger, and uni like this (fishy, old, and grainy) is the number one reason I used to abhor uni in the first place.  Ikko (in Costa Mesa) is the singular reason I learned to lalalallaLOVE it (See here for how it's supposed to be done).  Note:  I rarely order sushi...The boy and I are sashimi peeps, low-carb style, very LA I know, except they wouldn't break up the standard sashimi order (7 pieces per) so we had to get sushi instead.  Rules, schmules!
Sushi Gen was the pre-game meal...immediately dashed over to Staples Center to see Lakers beat PDX Trailblazers that night.  Nothing like a hot, sweaty Kobe to whet my appetite again after a horrendous early dinner.  Thank god for parmesan garlic fries!  A DEF must when you're out at Staples.
 {Vintage faux fur jacket, thrifted sweater, Banana Republic necklace, vintage belt, Forever 21 floral denim (on heavy rotation these days, those barely-there florals are perfect for spring!), Jeffrey Campbell Daisy D wedges}

Y’all don’t wanna mess with me when I’m hangry (hungry>angry…my new FAVE word, thanks Jess!) but I gotta say, my first written review on Yelp will be a copy and paste, word-for-word document of this exact post!  Don’t be fooled by their crowded parking lot, their line around the corner, or their 4.5 star Yelp review dude.  Sushi Gen gets a measly 1 star markup in my Yelp book.  +1 for holding my table as we were running 12 minutes late.  Can’t say it’s all bad, right?
Rest assured, there's TONS of fabulous eats in LA!
Mosey on over to my FAVE picks HERE and eat your heart out hunnies!
Hope y'all celebrate a splendid Easter Weekend!

oh my gosh heard all about sushi gen but yeah, sometimes you have to take Yelp reviews with a grain of salt. My all time favorite sushi bar is Taiko in Irvine! They NEVER fail me and I think I have high sushi standards. Have you been?? I've been meaning to try Ikko too.

I love your necklace and pants :)
